Maritime Geothermal Ltd.
Geothermal power is one of the several sources of renewable energy available in the world. It saw a 6% growth in the U.S. in 2009 and makes use of naturally occurring subsurface magma formations to generate electric power. First steam is created by injecting water into the hot subsurface layers. The steam is then fed back trough turbine generators to create electricity.
There are several companies specializing in manufacturing equipment to cater for this growing field within the renewable energy spectrum. One of them is Maritime Geothermal Ltd, a privately owned, Canadian based manufacturer of geothermal heat pumps. The company developed the Nordic line of heat pumps in 1983 and has been developing, manufacturing and improving geothermal heat pumps ever since.
Its been a long way since Maritime Geothermal Ltd. started as a back yard shop in 1983, when Glenn Kaye, a self-employed businessman teamed up with Edna Kaye, a retired business education teacher, to create the first 3 hp Open Loop - Passive Cooling - NORDIC ground water heat pump. It now boasts a modern manufacturing facility and testing lab built in 2003 where it continues to carry out research into innovative geothermal technology, which it exports all over the world.
The company continues to expand. In the fall of 2008 Maritime Geothermal Ltd. started building work on a 15,000 square feet addition to the original plant building to allow for a second assembly line to begin operation.
