Solar Energy Systems

Solar energy is potentially the cleanest source of electricity available to humanity. The challenge is to tap into sunlight efficiently, store all this power and then distribute it. Currently there are many companies working on solar energy systems that improve on existing technologies. Some of them work on materials, others work on processes. We often hear of technology breakthroughs. But taking new technologies to market is the major hurdle for most companies.

The most common solar energy systems are photovoltaic (PV) systems, which capture sunlight and convert it into electricity through solar panels. Efficiency rates vary but the average is around 15%. Solar PV electricity generation does not emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, for that reason these solar energy systems can help slow down global warming. There are many advantages associated with photovoltaic energy systems. These are low maintenance and can generate electricity for many years with very little intervention. Their operating costs are very low when compared to other power technologies. Their peak output can match peak demand on the grid, which means brownouts and blackouts are less likely to happen. Finally, solar power does not depend on foreign oil and aggressive mining; it is a ticket to independence and are kinder on the environment than other forms of energy generation.

From a financial point of view, solar systems also make business sense. These days there are many tax credits, rebate and incentive programs at state and federal level to help different types of organizations, from non-profits to corporations, implement clean solar power.

Besides, like renewable energy in general, the expansion of solar power can generate new jobs and promote economic growth. A recently enacted stimulus package which contains over $60 billion of energy related expenditures will expand tax credits and guarantees for companies who want to invest in solar power, research and development, invest in alternative energy projects and create green jobs in the U.S.
