Wind Energy in Texas
Wind Energy Blowing Strong in Texas
Winds of change are blowing across the United States. Texas now leads the nation in energy produced by wind.
"Wind energy is great because it has low emissions, and it`s a clean resource, and it`s also available, and it`s free. And in this region, we have been determined to be one of the leading wind producing areas in the country," says Wes Reeves of Xcel Energy.
The entire state is definitely the leading producer of wind energy. The American Wind Energy Association says that Texas has passed California as top producer. Turbines in the state have put out enough electricity to power 600,000 average U.S. homes.
Reeves says, "The electric industry in Texas has been on the leading edge of environmental of clean air and clean water especially this company we have a long history of protecting our environment."
Xcel Energy is one of many companies that uses wind energy and return the savings to customers.
"It`s actually cheaper than natural gas to generate power," says Reeves.
The country as a whole will soon reach the 10,000 mega watt mark and these Texas turbines will help lead the way to the milestone.
The White Deer wind ranch has 80 turbines and produces enough energy to power 30,000 homes.
