Wind powered zamboni
Salt Lake city to get a wind powered zamboni
By: Ethan K.
Park City, Utah is really embracing alternative energy. The new police station will be heated by solar power and a geothermal system, they just switched a bus fleet over to soybean based biodiesel fuel, and now we get the wind powered zamboni. The city plans to install a wind turbine near a local park, and charge the zamboni's batteries from the turbine's generator. It sounds simple but the the engineering is a few steps behind. Once they get it working, the city should be the first city to be powering it's olympic sized ice rink with a wind powered zamboni.
Before the city gets started on their plans, the city council first has to approve wind turbines that are higher than 35 feet. They do not want to destroy the city's view, but they do embrace energy alternatives such as wind power.
Author's comments: I think that all cities across the United States could learn a lesson from Park City. We can't wait for a solution to fall into our laps...we need to take action and forge solutions so that we don't leave the task of becoming less dependent on foreign oil to the next generation.
