Alternative Energy and Independence

Happy Independence Day 2011!

As an alternative energy blog, we see a clear connection between independence and non-fossil fuel sources of power.

Energy permeates every aspect of our lives so it’s not a niche subject – it’s in everyone’s interest. And it’s in our interest to pursue alternative forms of energy that are clean and can be sourced locally as well. Wind and solar power are the two most emblematic types of energy on the independence and renewability stakes.

Last Friday (01) Germany made an unprecedented move. The country decided to phase out nuclear by 2022 and make a clear move towards renewable energy. Germany is also moving away from coal-fueled power plants.

The country’s Parliament made a commitment to renewable energy like wind and solar to replace nuclear, which is the way we should all be heading instead of pursuing gas as a transition fuel or even a destination fuel.

The decision will enable Germany to reduce carbon pollution by 40% by 2020.

The European economic powerhouse has set an example of independence and forward thinking. It should be commended for that as well as emulated.
