Another Way to Use Solar Power

At home I have two rooms that have solar tubes come in and light up the rooms during the day. One is a small bathroom. The other is a family room with too few windows. The solar tubes are kind of like skylights except that the tubes bring the light to the room and the room’s ceiling does not have to be directly against the rooftop. These were even fairly easy to put in. It took the serviceman one working day to install everything.

Technology has increased the usefulness of this idea. Oak Ridge National Laboratory has even won awards for its hybrid lighting

What I like about their technique is the simplicity of it along with the added benefits of saving heat energy as well. There is also less energy loss since there is no energy conversion taking place. Furthermore, all the lights that would be on in those windowless rooms, like bathrooms, closets, copy rooms in the typical office building would be supplemented with these lights. I know I would have also enjoyed the extra light when I had a cubicle six cubicles from the window.

And after slaving all day on the latest spreadsheet, I have always hated never knowing what the weather was like outside in any kind of real way. I’ve worked down a dark deserted hallway in an interior basement room. After eight hours it was easy to be completely disconnected from the outside world. A tornado could have gone by and I would not have known. I can imagine that the light would change from these hybrid lights as a cloud passed between the sun and the solar light collector. The light would dim noticeably during a rainstorm, and I would have a little more warning to roll up the car window I left down.
