Can a Car Ever Be Green?

Norway says, “No!”

And I think I have to agree with them.

No matter what, using a car to move you around does not make that much sense. If it is just you, driving to work, wouldn’t a bus with a bunch of other people be cleaner?

If it is just you, shopping, couldn’t you do that near your home and walk or even online?

But what about travel, the family vacation, the memories of being in a car from Ohio to Florida, one Holiday Inn after another. Four younger siblings. “Are we there yet?” and “Don’t make me stop this car!” echoing against the windows.

I don’t think travel can ever be green. And that is a shame. I love travel. Driving across country or even just exploring neighboring countryside. But none of that is green. In a way, most of what people do is not green, just be definition.

Right now, I am listening to the radio, having my dishwasher run, typing this on a computer, and there are two lights on. What is green about any of that?

Yes, I could have more lights on, I could even have a TV on in another room. My heat could be going full blast. So I AM greener than I could be. But I am not green.

What is the right balance between living and using resources right now and preserving them, conserving them, reserving them for the next generations?

  • That’s good food for thought. I guess we can only hope to mitigate our impact on this planet. Living a simple life is the answer and there’s much joy to be found in that.
