One of the world’s biggest – and tallest – architectural icons gets a green makeover.
According to Alternative Energy News, New York’s Empire State will add another superlative to its statistics by becoming the world’s largest buyer of renewable wind power. It will use more than 100 million kWh of wind energy in the coming couple of years approximately.
In other words, the Empire State Building will run on 100% wind energy. Besides that, it has refitted is 6,500 windows with insulating glass for power savings. Altogether the building made an investment of $13.2 million to go green, money which it will easily recoup over the course of a few years, besides setting a great example.
The wind power will be bought from Green Mountain Energy Company (55 million kilowatt hours
(kWh) a year) and it is estimated that it will save 100 million pounds of carbon per year. The building now is on the Environmental Protection Agency’s top Green Power Purchasers list.
“EPA is pleased to welcome the Empire State Building to the Green Power Partnership. We applaud their commitment to using 100 percent green power to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Susan Wickwire, Chief of the Energy Supply and Industry Branch at EPA.
