Those of you who think Europe is a green paradise, think again. The International Heral Tribune is carrying some alarming news about the use of coal in Europe. It is estimated that 50 coal-fired plants will be built over the next five years, plants that will be in use for the next five decades.
European power-station owners emphasize that they are making the new coal plants as clean as possible. But critics say that “clean coal” is a pipe dream, an oxymoron in terms of the carbon emissions that count most toward climate change. They call the building spree short-sighted.
I would call it a betrayal. How are we supposed to meet carbon reduction targets if we adopt the dirtiest form of fuel? It sounds like madness to me.
