Finnish company trials 100% renewable biodiesel

Neste Green 100 diesel, made by a Finland-based refining and marketing company called Neste Oil, will be tested by private individuals and Neste Oil employees, the company says. “This is the first time anywhere that a premium renewable diesel fuel will be tested across a range of different cars,” says Neste Oil’s Executive Vice President, Oil Retail, Sakari Toivola.

The company says the diesel is made from 100% renewable raw materials and free of any fossil oil components. Private test drivers will trial Neste Green 100 diesel between mid-May and mid-Summer, while company employees already began the trial on April 26 and will continue after mid-Summer. They will be able to fill up at selected stations in Greater Helsinki.

The company said in a statement that previous trials have shown that Neste Oil’s renewable diesel’s greenhouse gas emissions over its entire life cycle are 40-80% lower than those of fossil diesel. Tailpipe emissions are also lower, it added.

“The majority of Neste Oil stations in Finland already offer Neste Green diesel, which contains a minimum of 10% renewable diesel blended with conventional diesel fuel,” says Sakari Toivola. “We plan to make Neste Green 100 diesel, which is produced form 100% renewable sources, available to drivers as soon as possible.”
