Google Drops Alternative Energy Initiative

One of the big news items in the alternative energy sector this week was that Google was pulling the plug on a program called Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal (RE

“Through REsolar power technology, and in Potter Drilling to advance its innovative geothermal drilling technology”, the company wrote on the REblog.

“We’re in the process of shutting down a number of products which haven’t had the impact we’d hoped for, integrating others as features into our broader product efforts and ending several which have shown us a different path forward”, said Urz Hölzle, Senior VP of Operations.

Besides Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal, Google is also pulling the plug on Google Knol, Google Search Timeline, Google Gear, Google Friend Connect, Google Bookmarks Lists and Google Wave.

The company added that at this point other institutions are better positioned than Google to take this work to the next level.
