Sunday is Mother’s Day and like many special dates – and Mother’s Day is a very special one – we should not forget about Mother Nature when it comes to celebrations.
What do holidays usually revolve around? A day trip perhaps, gifts, food and drinks seem to be the norm for many of us. So let’s have a look at each of them and see how we can make them greener and more sustainable.
– A day out – Surely one of the least impacting things we can do to celebrate Mother’s Day – if it’s done on a bicycle or on foot. If the weather is good, why not go trekking with the family or spend a day in a park breathing in some fresh air? Bonding with nature is one of the most relaxing things to do in life and it’s a great way to teach kids to respect the environment by giving them a first-hand experience of it. We tend to care more for whom and what we know.
– Gifts – If your mother already has a green heart, why not buy her something powered with alternative energy such as solar power garden lights or energy efficient lights? Alternatively, if she likes fashion, these beautiful cruelty-free vegan bags have caught our attention. According to Ecorazzi, the fabrics used to make them are organic and fair trade, and the bags are sewn by hand in the U.S. You can also have a browse around Etsy for vintage stuff – you’ll find an amazing selection to choose from hundreds of vendors. If you feel like giving your mother a flower bouquet, make sure it’s organic – or just pick flowers from your own garden, if you have one. Wild flower arrangements can look pretty amazing.
-Food and drinks – When it comes to food, nothing beats a vegetarian meal on green kudos. There’s a veggie version of virtually every dish and I would suggest this link to mouth-watering meat-free recipes, including some scrumptious dairy-free and egg-free recipes. This article gives you some suggestions of organic beers while here you can get some useful tips on how to buy organic wines – and learn about what makes them organic.
Energy Refuge wishes Mother Nature and all mothers in the world a great green day on Sunday!
