Here is what I have noticed in the past week as gas as hit the $4 mark.
I see more guys in business clothes on scooters with a funky helmet.
I see more parents with their kids walking to the store.
I see more cars with their windows down even in the 90 degree heat.
I see more cars driving the speed limit and fewer zipping by.
What will $5/Gallon cause?
Will it be cheaper for people to share hotel rooms than go back to their exurb homes during the work week?
Will it make more sense to work four 10 hour days than five 8 hour days?
Will there actually be more carpooling?
Will people work from home 1 day per week?
Will we stop working crazy hours because we have to catch the next bus?
Will bike/scooter safety and accidents become the lead-in gruesome news stories on the local news?
Will new construction actually become designed to be walker friendly?
Will people actually demand better and more public transportation?
I find the last item most intriguing because whenever I hear people on talk radio complain about gasoline prices, not once do I hear someone say, “And what we need are more busses so I don’t have to take my car.” Let’s use less AND create ways to generate more.
No oil from Iraq yet, but the war bills keep pouring in! Indymac dies, and the Feds cover the carnage, we don’t bat an eye, the spending is at a panic level now, before Fannymae, Freddiemac and others go down! Spend every dollar while it still buys something! All will be covered by the Feds, but the dollar will be devalued so much gas at the pump will hit $10.00gal or more! we are living in clover right now, but the ‘you know what’ is about to hit the fan!
