ITM Power, one of Europe’s leading electrolyser and fuel cell development companies, recently received some nice free publicity on ITV News, a mainstream news programme in the UK.
Electrolysers are devices that produce hydrogen from electricity and water. Hydrogen, alongside solar power, is one of the cleanest sources of power and alternatives to fossil fuels. On a hydrogen-based economy, we can hope to have pollution-free motoring and zero-carbon housing.
The news story shows the company’s hydrogen home refuelling station, from where you can pump your car with hydrogen and power your home as well. The device could provide the answer to the infrastructural problems that the hydrogen industry has been trying to overcome.
Earlier this year the company opened a manufacturing facility in Sheffield (north of England), with a capacity to produce electrolysers on a modular basis in 1kW, 10kW and 100kW outputs. The smaller units can be used in automotive applications while mid-range electrolysers have the capability to help provide fuel for heat and power in homes and businesses. The largest electrolysers can be used to provide ‘buffer’ storage for energy produced by wind, wave and solar power.
“The opening of the factory takes us out of the research and development phase and into commercial production. This is a highly significant step, not just for us, but for the quest to find affordable, practical and clean alternatives to fossil fuelsâ€, said Jim Heathcote, ITM Power’s Chief Executive Officer.
