The number of residential solar photovoltaic installations in the United States could double thanks to a loan guarantee offered by Energy Secretary Steven Chu to SolarCity’s “SolarStrong†project.
The project will see SolarCity partnering with a military housing developer to install solar panels on 160,000 rooftops across 124 military housing projects in 33 American states.
SolarCity said the project will create more than $1bn in solar projects and add 371 MW of new solar generation capacity. The company said it has received funding from U.S. Renewables Group and Bank of America.
The installations are expected to create nearly 6,000 direct job-years related to installation and maintenance. SolarCity said it intends to fill as many vacancies as possible with veterans and military family members. The company currently employs 1,200 people in 11 states.
“This is the largest domestic residential rooftop solar project in history,” said Chu. “It can also be a model for other large-scale rooftop solar projects that help America regain its lead in the solar industry.”
The Department of Defense (DOD) is the largest energy consumer in the U.S. and it has set a goal to get 25% of its energy from renewable sources by 2025.
