The July issue of the National Geographic magazine approaches a very important topic: energy. In the face of the Gulf oil spill tragedy, it has become more pressing than ever to seek out green, clean alternatives to fossil fuel.
The grid, they say, is an old-fashioned thing. “The electrical grid is still basically 1960s technology,” says physicist Phillip F. Schewe, author of The Grid. “The Internet has passed it by. The meter on the side of your house is 1920s technology.”
The magazine looks at the proposed upgrades that will allow the current electrical grid to incorporate clean energy and improve reliability. It also looks at the ideas to create a smarter grid that will enable us to become more aware of our electricity consumption and, consequently, more energy-efficient.
The article includes an interactive map that shows locations across the country where renewable energy has the most potential. For example, Texas has more wind-generation capacity than the grid can handle. Therefore, proposed new transmission lines could help Texas deliver its wind energy to cities in the East and West.
