Solar Power Gadgets: Solar Kit

Here at Energy Refuge we have a soft spot for small-scale solar energy applied to every day, utilitarian gear.
Earlier this week, we blogged about these rather nice looking pants equipped with solar panels. And now, thanks to the folks at Get Solar, we learned about Goal Zero’s Guide 10 power pack, which combines a compact rechargeable power pack and a foldable solar panel kit.

It features four AA rechargeable batteries, a USB output port and an LED flashlight. The pack is designed to work in conjunction with the 7-watt mono-crystalline solar panels of the GOAL ZERO Nomad 7M. The combination creates the Guide 10 Adventure Kit.

Goa Zero says the kit can completely charge in four hours of full sunlight and can power a wide range of USB and DC devices.
The figures are quite impressive: 30 hours of cell phone power, seven to 10 hours of power for a smart phone and 40 hours for an iPod.

The product was presented at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which is being held this week in Las Vegas and folds tomorrow.

“As the market for portable handheld devices such as smartphones, tablets and cameras continues to explode, consumers are developing an ever-growing reliance on these devices and want to stay connected, no matter where they are,” said Joe Atkin, GOAL ZERO’s CEO.

According to a Goal Zero’s release, Guide 10 will be available both as a single unit power pack for $39.99 and as part of the Guide 10 Adventure Kit at $139.95) at retailers such as REI, Eastern Mountain Sports, Bass Pro and Cabela’s from March 2011.
