The largest photovoltaic solar plant in the U.S., Sempra Generation’s Copper Mountain Solar project, received the Solar Project of the Year by Renewable Energy World as part of the 2011 Excellence in Renewable Energy Awards. The award was announced at the Renewable Energy World Conference and Expo in Tampa, Florida. Copper Mountain Solar beat hundreds of nominations in the category.
The plant is a 48-megawatt (MW) solar installation in Boulder, Nevada, located about 40 miles southeast of Las Vegas. It was completed in late 2010 and generates enough power for 14,000 average homes. The power generated there is sold to Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E).
Sempra said it has big plans for 2011 as well. The company hopes that by mid-2011 it will start the 150-MW phase of its Mesquite Solar complex, which is a 700-MW photovoltaic development opportunity located west of Phoenix. Altogether the solar developer has a development pipeline of more than 1,000 MW. It operates in the states of California, Nevada and Arizona.
