It is Oscars week so we got inspired by that and decided to seek out the greenest film stars out there.
– Mark Ruffalo – Mark is competing in the best supporting actor category due to his role in The Kids Are All Right movie, a contender in the Best Picture category. But apart from that, he’s also become a vocal critic of fracking, a short for hydraulic fracturing, a type of gas drilling that has been raising eyebrows with the success of Gasland by Josh Fox, which is Oscar nominated in the Best Documentary category. Mark even went to Congress to ask for more regulation of this industry, which is accused of polluting groundwater with carcinogenic chemicals.
– Natalie Portman – another runner-up on Sunday’s 83rd Oscars ceremony (Best Actress category, for her role in Black Swan, also contender in the Best Picture category), Portman is also impeccable with her green credentials. A committed vegan, she’s written an article for the Huffington Post about that and she has appeared National Geographic This Bulb video highlighting the benefits of switching to compact fluorescent light bulbs. She also donated proceeds from a vegan shoe line she made for Te Casan to environmental charities and carbon neutralizes her journeys.
– Leonardo DiCaprio – the vocal environmentalist is the star of Inception, a strong presence at the 2011 Oscars ceremony with eight nominations. DiCaprio is known for his environmental activism and his involvement with the movie The 11th Hour, which deals with the state of the natural environment. Recently he donated $1 million to World Wide Fund to save tigers from extinction, his current banner campaign.
– Woody Harrelson – Woody is an old favorite amongst greenies and his commitment is legendary. A vegan and raw foodist, he once traveled to the west coast in the U.S. on a bike and a domino caravan with a hemp oil-fueled biodiesel bus with The Spitfire Agency. The adventure was documented in the film Go Further. These days he lives in a self-sustained community in Hawaii. The Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance website thanks him for his help on its home page.
– Daryl Hannah – Daryl runs her home on solar power, drives a biodiesel-fueled car and keeps a video blog about sustainable solutions called DHLoveLife. She’s such an ardent supporter of biodiesel that she’s even selling it from her website. She’s a co-founder of the Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance.
