Today is World Environment Day, organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the slogan for this year is “CO2, Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy”. New Zealand is this year’s host, with events taking place in the city of Wellington. The objective of the day is to highlight resources and initiatives that promote low carbon economies and life-styles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation and eco-friendly consumption. Recognising that climate change is becoming the defining issue of our era, UNEP is asking countries, companies and communities to focus on greenhouse gas emissions and how to reduce them.
This is the day for us to remind ourselves strongly that Mother Nature is everything and if we kill her, we die. It’s a day of increasing our reverence to the planet and all its living creatures, and make of it our ethical stance in the world. Happy World Environment Day.
